I do not have any solid opinion one way or the other in terms of whether she murdered Tegan, but I believe it is fair that all points are given due consideration and that assumptions whether harmful or helpful are avoided where possible. It is surprising that you mention the ABC series, given that they used a Forensic Perinatal Psychiatrist, who had a specialty of dealing with mothers who murdered their babies, to examine Keli and who assessed that she was not a pathological liar. 3) the birth control was not as effective as todays options. It's not hard to believe that 1) she didn't know that alcohol would effect the use of birth control. Let alone this was in the 90's and she was forced to navigate it completely alone without any support from family or friends. Vanessa Lane, Mary Papadakis, Shelby Whyte, Kirandeep Sidhu, Kezban Ozen. Even today it is not unusual for women to receive absolutely shit advice and care from their doctors regarding birth control and the effects / things to watch out for. However she also seemed to enjoy drinking at the pubs at the time which could potentially negate the effects of Birth Control.

Like the inquest, the trial was noteworthy for the fact that Keli Lane refused to give evidence.She was taking birth control. She was examined at the time of sentencing by a psychiatrist, who found no sign of a psychiatric disorder. This of course makes the case all the more disturbing. With the exception of the extraordinary behaviour described above, Lane appears to have been a normal, indeed a healthy, individual. His Honour disagreed and the matter was settled (during the trial) by the Appeals Court, in Tedeschi’s favour. Senior Crown Prosecutor Mark Tedeschi argued with Justice Anthony Whealy that Lane’s lies to investigators and others could be seen as indicating consciousness of guilt. In just one strand of the search, 9,000 primary schools around Australia were contacted to see if any child who might be Tegan was enrolled. Ultimately police launched a massive search effort for father and daughter, which took two years and cost millions of dollars. Lane claimed that two days after Tegan’s birth, she had discharged herself and child from Auburn Hospital and handed Tegan over to her father, a man named Andrew Morris or Norris. Two days later, Lane left Auburn Hospital. Tegan Lee Lane was born on September 12, 1996. Police behaviour in the early stages of the case has never been publicly explained. She put her first and third babies up for adoption but a year ago Lane was charged with Tegan's murder. Following an Inquest in 2005/06 and further investigations, police decided not to charge Lane, but this was overridden by the Director of Public Prosecutions. He notified police, who amazingly did not interview Lane until 2001. In 1999 Lane approached the Department of Community Services to adopt out her third child, and a staff member discovered that Tegan had been born but there were no subsequent records of her.
This strains credulity, but was thoroughly investigated by police and tested in court, and is all true. She became pregnant five times in seven years, and had two abortions and adopted out three babies, hiding their existence not only from her friends, family and fellow sportswomen, but (in the cases of the first two) from Gillies himself. On September 14 th, two days after Tegan was born Lane left the hospital with her around 12:00-1:00pm and showed up at her parent’s house around 3:00pm without the baby.
